Abstract

What makes a pre-emptive disaster evacuation successful? Beyond information and alerts, people act when they can feel the magnitude of risk. This project explores how cross-modal illusions in virtual reality, where synchronized visual and auditory cues evoke sensations of movement, pressure, or instability, can create an embodied sense of danger without physical motion platforms or haptic devices. Using low-cost VR, the system engages the brain’s natural multisensory integration to transform disaster data into a visceral experience. A sensory contrast learning module allows learners to compare different scenes with cross-modal versions, demonstrating how perception and engagement change when multiple senses align. This early work outlines a scalable framework for embodied disaster education and resilience training, setting the stage for future extensions to additional hazard types and group learning environments that cultivate felt understanding of risk and preparedness.
